i didn't really have much of an appreciation of biggie until i really sat down and listened to 'ready to die'. it's quality. tupac? i like a few things he's done, but otherwise? eh.

Big Poppa is still the King of NY- no other rapper has been able to take that title since March 9th, 1997. He's gone but not forgotten. His music puts me in a great mood and at the end of my day, that's all that really matters.

hip hop is not always about having a consciencious (sp?) message- sometimes it's just about lyricism, rhyming skills, making people laugh and just generally enjoying the beat and flow....making you wanna get up off your bum and dance. music doesn't always have to carry a 'message' to be good. if you don't like biggie- that's your perogative- but you can't write him off as garbage. anybody in the hip hop community/world knows that biggie smallz is not anything close to garbage.

Chia rocks. I think when he says hiphop isn't hiphop without a conscientious message, he's talking about the old-school hiphop that was positive, like BDP and RUN DMC and whatnot. Looking at that shit, I'm not even sure I'd call Biggie hiphop.

On the other hand, I may have read chia's point completely wrong, in which case, let's resurrect B.I.G. and put him and chia in the Thunderdome.

A lot of people don't realize that rap and hip hop were developed as a joint venture by the KKK and the American Nazi Party. They hired some out of work musicians and set them working with a team of renegade psychologists with the idea of creating a new kind of music that would encourage blacks to kill eachother, use drugs and keep the general level of racial tension high.

They felt that this would put blacks at a disadvantage in the comming Helter Skelter race war.

Agree or disagree, i love hearing (reading) other peoples' thoughts on what they think hip hop is and/or isn't. i am hot-headed and extremely opinionated on the subject so it's fun for me to see what other headz are thinkin--keep it comin...
