Exactly. I have the greatest respesct for Mr. Card's ability as a writer of fantasy and science fiction. I suppose that's why I was so surprised at the stand he takes on what is primarily a media event and one of the greatest non-issues in many years.
In fact, it's become such a media circus that I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that the current administration cooked the whole thing up to draw election year attention away from the real issues like the failing economy, trillion dollar deficits, erosion of constitutional guarantees and a booged down war in the Middle East that has the potential to become another Viet Nam.
I don't understand how he can fail to understand that all social evolution requires and is often a direct result of changing definitions. Democracy could not exist until the definition of government was changed to include it. Women and minorities would not be able to vote today were it not for cahanges in the definition of thw word "voter".
While Mr. Card makes a number of valid points regarding child rearing the currently defined nuclear family is not the only nor is it necessarily the best method of providing a stable home life for children. History and archaeology are in fact finding that it is, in fact, a relatively recent development.
Instead of regarding the legalization of gay marriages as a direct attack on his own marriage, which of course it is not, perhaps Mr. Card would do well to focus his attention on some of todays really dangerous issues.
