I belive that LotR follow the books pretty well, better then most Holywood book rips.. Now some argue that a lot of the key scenes (like scenes in Loftlorien in FotR) were missing and it took away from the film, yet in the extended edition they were there.. Shrug, point in case is that I think they did a lot better job with LotR then Spiderman.. :)
Doctor Octopus is a brilliant choice. I was hoping that they didn't shoose a villain that required an ungodly amount of CG*. Doc Oc simply requires CG "aid", kinda like Spiderman himself.
