anyway, this is a huge breakthrough. we used to talk about this in my criminal justice classes, especially in homicide investigation.

my dad knew the lead investigator on the case. a weird guy. he always saw this case as a huge failure, so when hollywood comes calling, he tells them to fuck off every time. so he's never really featured much in the movies. he actually left the police force, mostly on account of this case.

my homicide investigation instructor was a retired bronx cop. personally handled the son of sam case. i thought it was fucking badass. loved listening to his stories.

Not to mix Hollywood wit reality, but was the lead investigator your Dad knew played by Mark Ruffalo (Toschi) or A Edwards (Armstrong)? The movie, although Hollywoodized, appeared to capture the mood of the times.

i don't remember his name, actually. but the way my dad talked about it was that in real life, he was a major player, and he barely factors into the movies.

looking at the wikipedia entry, i'm pretty sure it's dave toschi, because i know that he's involved in security. my dad worked at a hotel, and that's how he met him.

oddly enough, it does say that he was an 'advisor' on the set of the movie, but i dunno. maybe he's changed his mind on the matter.

Yeah, I remember reading the same thing about Toschi being tight-lipped about this case until the most recent screenplay and movie. FWIW, he seems like a decent person that got cast into a pretty tough case, pre-advanced forensics.
