When I was there in the 80's (as a nuke tourist), my observation was that there wasn't a bug, nor bird, nor healthy bush anywhere around.
One of the scariest things I ever saw was when we drove from Seattle to Yellowstone, and a Hanford semi with a single barrel on it label with the radioactive icon emblazoned on its side blew past me in a rainstorm doing 80+ on a mountain road.
Anything so bad a single barrel gets its own truck is some bad shit, and to see the driver taking suck a risk...well, whiskey & kittens!, it could've been bad.
