Im not saying that Autism is not real but I think that doctors and parents jump to conclusions these day to fast. Instead of saying 'my child is a little hyper active.' They just cut it short and say there child is autistic.

I do believe in autism but when in 10 years the rate jumps from 4 / 100,000 to 8 / 100,000 I believe it to be something else.

My 3 year old is a maniac. We had to lock down our whole house because he climbed and got into everything. We have to drive him around the neighborhood at night to get him to sleep. He doesn't take naps and so on and so on. He is just a normal kid except he thrives for attention.

No one is sure what the seemingly increased rates might be do to. Is it environmental toxins, or is it that testing for autism is more commonplace now--and simply more kids are being screened?

The consensus of thought seems to be that some kids are genetically predisposed or at-risk for developing autism. Not all will develop it, but certain kids are exposed to a trigger agent (probably something they're allergic to) early in life that subtly alters their biochemistry. Toxins and waste products that would normally be passed out of the body are instead leaked into the bloodstream and find their way to the brain, where they interfere with normal neurochemical activity. Since our brains are so incredibly complex, autism presents differently from child to child. No two act exactly the same way, or are impaired to the same degree.

I think Wolfer's is right when he says that today's parents are more likely to think 'autism' when their kid starts showing some unusual behavior. Awareness of autism is greater than ever, so it's more likely that parents will first reach for that as an explanation. However, there are very sophisticated cognitive tests that can rule out autism in a lot of kids, while confirming it in others. Objective testing is critically important, along with getting a exam and diagnosis from a board-certified developmental pediatrician.

Some have serious issues others need some guidance.

My son was the Little Prince of Darkness in his young years 2-8. He would get up in the middle of the night raid the fridge for eggs to toss and roll around the floor and also fed the cats and dogs EVERYTHING he found on the shelves. He stuffed socks into the toilet and watched as the water ran over the rim after flushing. He dropped my hacky sacks, car keys, remote controls down the rain gutters in the street. He peed on all the neighbors shrubs. I had some friends over for a cookout and he was a great little host, offering to get EVERYONE a new beer... (he got busted) on the way to the trash he would drain the cans and bottles of the backwash open a fresh one take a few swigs... and then serve the fresh beverage. He flooded the entire house with bath water cannon balling from the vanity to the tub filled to the rim. He waxed my car with Crisco...
