As Kahuna and I were discussing this last night, I noticed something in the chase that I hadn't in the previous 3 or 4 times that I'd seen the film before.
At several points, starting at around the 7 minute mark, you can hear McQueen doubleclutching the Mustang. He knew that he was driving it, literally, until the wheels came off, and didn't want to blow the gearbox out before it was done.
