The medicinal science in the USA is second to none; if you wanted to be cured of a rare disease or some crazy surgery the USA has the best facilities. The reason US health care ranks so poorly is because of it's expense and lack of accessibility, not it's raw medicinal prowess. The article seems to confuse this a bit.
When you take the statistics from the whole country, it looks terrible because only a tiny fraction of the population makes much use of our ridiculously expensive system while everyone else is fat, sick, and poor.
