Thanks for swarming this. Back in the late 90's all my friends were buying in the suburbs but I decided to live in the city (Silver Lake in LA) for the same reasons. I got a lot of shit for that but now I feel vindicated, especially since home prices in my area have remained very stable.

The next fallout from the subprime crisis will be consumer credit: motor vehicle financing, small loans, student loans, credit cards -- actually the problem has already begun. Sallie Mae, the largest private student loan provider in the country, is in deep financial trouble and this is only the tip of the iceberg. The dominoes will continue to fall in the consumer credit industry, and don't think the Fed's interest rate cuts are going to help with creditors tightening their lending standards and practices to prevent further losses in the industry.
