well, it's not a deterrent to crime. the appeals process costs more than keeping someone imprisoned for life. and frankly, if i had to choose between a life in prison and death, i would choose death.

apart from those scenarios scenario, if and when there is ABSOLUTELY no doubt as to guilt or innocence, I would agree: an eye for an eye.

well there are lots of problems with it. it doesn't deter crime (in fact, when it is repealed, crime rates typically go down), it costs less to simply keep a person locked up for life, and you're giving the government power to kill.

not only is it pretty rare to have ABSOLUTELY no doubt (life is not CSI), but an eye for an eye is a retarded system. who do you suppose is going to do the maiming, the raping, the dismembering, the torturing?
