The idea is interesting. The people that use it are the same annoying people that update their IM away messages constantly, so it renders it mostly useless at this point.
Fukingben made a good point for using it: it lets the reader choose their avenue of alert. Take the SMS shitlist, since that's what prompted the conversation; Ben gets that on SMS, obviously. He'd prefer to track that breaking news in a feed. Twitter lets him do that.
