I used to own two pet stores.
We sold live rock, which was basically coral reef jackhammered out of the ocean or blown to bits and collected later.
We also sold saltwater fish, which are notoriously difficult to breed and raise. Some sellers captured them by shooting a small dose of cyanide in their face. The surrounding coral lifeforms got the collateral damage.
The fish died in the store or shortly after purchase, which sucked.
I was often harassed by people who despised all this. Years later, I see the merit of their argument and generally hate all aspects of the pet business, but at the time I was only concerned with paying bills.
Both practices continue.
