This is very similar to the way our ISP's have always charged. Different plans for different speeds and download limits, just like a mobile phone. Unlimited bandwidth for a flat rate charge would be bit-torrent heaven, as it is I have to watch what I download or I get shaped back to dial-up speed.

You're also in Australia, which according to what I've read is worse than the US in terms of broadband.

You are right. A friend of ours has just been told it could be a year or more before there is a line available for her. She lives in a new suburb of a capital city, so it is not like she is somewhere remote or hard to get infrastructure to. I live in a worse spot, being 100 kilometres out in the boonies, but I can at least get ADSL at 1.5mbps.
