I don't think it matters if it is technically 'torture' or not. I think there are a lot of people who think torture is actually a good thing. The real debate, hiding behind the waterboarding discussions, is whether or not the government and its hirelings should be permitted to torture anyone at all.

Are there crimes so heinous that torture is justified? Does torture work? Are there certain classes of people (non-citizens) who can be tortured, while others (rich white guys) who shouldn't?

If it doesn't work for extracting information, is it still ok to torture those cretins anyhow? (Especially if it gives some jack booted thug a woody?)

The orientation process for new employees at my workplace is called, 'New Employee On-boarding.' Somehow, I mis-read it EVERY TIME as 'New Employee Waterboarding.' Frankly, some of the outcomes are probably the same.

I tried waterboarding once. I kept falling off so I just stuck to using the tube.

as gc said above, the fact that we're even debating whether or not it's torture is absurd. of course it's torture, and has been so since the day it was conceived.

reading the linked thread, the tougher question becomes:

is this what our country finds acceptable (stands for)?

think about this, though: our country (and everyone else's) has been doing this stuff as long as it was thought necessary and only now are the general populace finding out about it. where does that leave us?
