Funny thing, Toyota's manufacturing/supply base is more American than Chrysler/GM/Ford. And they keep increasing their US investments every year, and 'build where they sell' is one of the principles that makes them the #1 automaker in North America.

I actually work in the auto industry, and I was able to get some info from my counterpart at the Cambridge plant pretty easy (I think they get asked this alot, it was in a handy dandy info sheet).

They are building a new Chrysler plant next to my plant in St. Clair County. (I'm no longer in automotive, btw) The big local news was that the plant would create more local jobs.

The fact is, Chrysler will consolidate two existing plants into the new one they are building. They will employ only 2/3 of the current employees in those two plants when this one goes online. The jobs will all be UAW jobs and they will go to the UAW members with the most seniority. Not only does this not create jobs for the local population, but it also puts 1/3 of the workers in two existing plants out of work. The net/net is more unemployed workers in Michigan and my local government gave away land to Chrysler at near zero tax for a large number of years. The only winner is Chrysler. Everyone else gets nada.

Fuck the big three, and then some.

It is really an exercise in what not to do in a modern age of instant information. Also, the chief of staff's arguments epitomize the one-inch thoughts of many conservatives, where their reasoning and arguments are so basic, and honestly without insight or thought. IE... If you question someone, you are Un-American... if you are against how a war is fought, you ARE obviously FOR the enemy. These assinine arguments are what really brings the country down, because nothing is ever that simple... and those that propogate this line of reasoning and discourse, really aren't interested in much beyond themselves. Of course, the prerogative of a politician could be debated, for Dems, Inds, and Reps, and who they really represent is at issue. It is just anyone that sees and thinks this way, let alone an educated (supposedly) representative, just deserves to be buried and marginalized in our society. Its a marketplace of ideas and debate, with little room for dogmatic opinions or intractible stances. Yes, yes.. that is idealism and progressive thinking for our stunted country, but thats where we should be going... while pushing this dolt right off the road.
