I think closer to the root is the problem that people want to know news, or appear informed, but what they want to expose themselves to is entertainment. After all, news is boring, and the TV is primarily for turning your brain off.
Hence the latest trends in the media with the pre-packaged outrage and the tawdry sensationalistic stuff.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. You can, however, entertain him with fart sounds until he funds your sponsors.
