'Computer 'science' ' , on the other hand IS mainstream (name 5 people you know without a computer. I can name three.)
Technology as practical science, in all of its guises, from your toaster to your car, to the laptop you scurry off to pornsites with, to the phone , etc. blah blah blah, is rampant.
As long as science offers convenience, it's amiably relevant, when you gotta think about it, or deal with it, it's suddenly Cthulu calibre demonic.

I'm no sociologist nor historian but I agree with Shostok that the problem stems from science and technology sometimes producing threats to various lifestyles. That's not to blame science. I think human intelligence, endowed as it is with consiouness requires an 'ego' to separate ourselves from that which we percieve. Egos, as they are understood, are prone to exhibit 'pride' in various degrees at various times (and even among various animals, but that's another topic). Pride can motivate a scientist to build a flux capacitor as well as motivate a disguntled worker to toss a sandal into the machinery. Sometimes pride is described as stubborness. Scientific inquiry yields new technologies, which are always a two way street as livelihoods that depended on the old technology dissapear. I don't really have a point, I'm just ass-babbling.

It is all Galileo's fault for challenging Aristotle.
