Right. It's not an accident. It's a result of an all-too-common rhetorical tactic that's meant to cheapen the debate until it's all so distasteful that nobody wants to engage in it, and our media enables this with their lazy 'X says this, Y says this, we're fair and balanced, now sports' mode of operation.

In this case, the climate change skeptics are yelling 'Al Gore is pissing down our backs and telling us it's raining!' To prove their point (not really though), they proceed to piss down our backs and tell us it's raining. And rather than get to the point where we try to sort things out, we simply dismiss it all because, well, who wants to get pissed on? And it allows us to feel good about it because we can act all cynical and cool and say 'look at all those dumb fucks pissing on each other, I'm glad I don't vote.'

It's easy to say there are no winners in that kind of mess, but that's incorrect. The real winners are the ones who don't want the debate in the first place. And the people who like to get pissed on, I guess.
