I heard an interview with him several weeks ago. I was struck by two things, one was that he sounded amazing and in complete control of his faculties. And the other was that he sounded like he had accepted that he was living on borrowed time and he was ready to go.

Still don't get it. I read like three of his books and found them cute but cannot now remember a single plot point or idea. Nigger was no Heinlein.

He was often asked to be a valedictorian, and some of his speeches are in 'Palm Sunday' - They are great, it's worth seeing if a library has it.
I would read his stuff in the summer during high school, he was like a secret friend who 'got it' and was telling you about it. He seemed wise and innocent at the same time.
Cynicism is easy, cynicism with wit is worth paying attention to.

All right, so he was a little bit Heinlein.
