Debian can easily be made to scream. Do a net-install, apt-get only what you need, then upgrade your kernel(i.e. apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686) to the amd64 or 686 or whatever proc you're running.
I know from scars that Red hat can be really tempramental depending on processor / video combinations. I have had bad luck with Athalon processors. Plus the YACC sucks. How is the support?
