I did that busking in Vancouver, at the Skytrain stations, plugging in an amp and keyboard at the bottom of the escalator, and played for a couple of hours,every day, for about a month.
I'm NO kinda prodigy, but I made exactly the same kind of money.
SOME folks pay you for the effort of being there. Most are too busy in their own heads to even hear you.

i think doing this kind of thing during rush hour is accepting 75% defeat. it's like 'how many people pull over and buy DELICIOUS APPLES from a roadside stand when 15 minutes late for work?' nonetheless, it is pretty telling. i notice street musicians and appreciate them if they're good - even if they're the 'go-go drumming on 5 gallon buckets' kind - but maybe 3 minutes while on the way to something else is all some people have available.
