i think the more important question is: how many of you buy dells?

Yeah, I must admit my school (and all the offices I know of) do. Dell can sometimes can offer pretty good prices on prebuilt computers, because of the sheer number of components they purchase from manufacturers.

i have a dell with debian. and i seem to remember submitting the dell's idea storm site as a link a while ago.......bitter

i build my own; this is why i kinda don't care.

if i were to buy a dell in the future, it'd probably be a laptop. i doubt i'd be happy with any of the few distros they'll likely offer, though.

this is good for businesses that 1) use dells and 2) happen to run the distro(s) they'll offer. i mean, it's great and all but i'm pretty 'meh' about it.

It all boils down to cost, most large companies lease their computers. Dell has excellent corporate lease/service package that make them a desireable choice. When making a computer choice for my workplace (yes, I'm a beancounting fuck), Dell gave us the best ROI.

Now I know that you all nub your hand built hotrods, and they are awesome and shit, but sometimes the factory option makes a lot of sense. I recently bought a Gateway, it fucking rocks, it has a shiny butan and everything!!

mundi baby, it all boils down to having another major manufacturer qualifying components and drivers for the OS. Therefore if you are a savvy Chinese/Singaporean/Thai/etc. component manufacturer, you make linux a supported part of your product.

Ecosystem wins. Win-modems die out.

I'm currently running Ubuntu on my Dell; it seems okay.

My home computer is a hand built hot rod, but all of our PCs at work are Dell. A fact that I am immensely pleased with since our parent company has a contract with HP.
