If he had said '...who also happens to be [nice and cute, &etc)' ... the point he was making was that Obama is a worthy opponent. But then he's made several other off-color remarks over the years that might indicate a more severe personality problem.

This is interesting I think largely for its potential to be be construed as a generalization against blacks rather than for actually being one. The only real spark here will be watching the Bill O'Reilly types try to turn this into a macaque fest.

Biden's comment does reveal something about the state of the American perception of race. Should he be faulted for speaking about what's on the 'American' mind. It was inelegant, and, for a politician, simply stupid. The uproar, especially from the mainstream, is from the discomfort of whitey's guilt. So what.

It's too bad he had to go all hoof-in-mouth on Obama, because he took some pretty solid shots at Clinton and Edwards in that interview.

I like Biden. Sort of. But the comment is completely true. There have been few to zero public african-americans figures that are 'clean' and 'mainstream'. Jackson, Sharpton all the rest of the left over civil rights *icons*-none of them had true mainstream appeal and were mostly branded as extremists. Obama really does, he's quite charasmatic. I find myself liking what he says-true I reread the comments and realize I don't really-but he has definite strong mainstream appeal-with the kind of background to give him intellectual legitimacy. What other mainstream American black public figure can you say that for? Excluding entertainment and sports figures the list is short. One big figure comes to mind but not much else. But he's probably not electable, if mostly because he has three syllables in his last name.

Biden cannot play on the presidential playing field. He is too clumsy. I appreciate his talents in foreign affairs, but he is a clod.

In terms of widely accepted figures I was just thinking MLK,powell-as widely accepted political figures-but then poitier too I guess. But this is an increasingly stupid line of thought-and I was just referring to obama as unelectable because of the three syllabes
