As Spod says, I live in Adelaide, and our state government is dead against this. BUT, our drinking water comes from the Murray - Darling River System, which is used by three other states ( Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria ) for irrigation and other agricultural things including hosing out pig stys and dairies, and by a large number of towns as the ultimate repository for their ( processed ) sewerage, so I don't really think that we are all that much safer.
Still, I would prefer to see solar, wind, or tide-powered desalinisation plants put into service instead..
And before someone makes the obvious point about now knowing why I am usually full of shit, I have a rainwater tank for drinking purposes.
