It's entirely possible that this guy is running for President because of the same sentiments that made this speech occur, but overall, sadly, it is more likely that this speech occurred because he's running for President.

Tell the people what they want to hear, that's the order of the day.

I don't know too much about Sen. Hagel, but this speech makes me want to learn more about him. Take a look at his voting record and whatnot.

I will definately pay more attention to this guy going forward just to see if he actually walks the talk.

From what I know about his opinions, he has held the same level of skepticism and expressed criticism long before it became fashionable. So, I believe that he believes what he is saying, but I also put it in context of a potential presidential run. Everything we choose to do is by necessity selfish, if we want to consider first-cause-type stuff. If he gets into office because he selfishly wants power for himself, by making worthwhile speeches, and once in office, affects good changes -- for personal glory or state betterment or whatever -- what's the difference? I'll take a vainglorious commander-in-chief who substantially betters our situation over a selfless milquetoast any day.

As a reformed Libertarian, I don't hold out much hope for a worthwhile candidate from any party. Yes, yes, Lyndon Larouche is a fag. My standards have been substantially lowered since Clinton. All I can ask myself is what was in the air when this country elected George W. Bush. Did we get what we deserved? We can claim we made a mistake, but we elected him for a second time.
