Because businesses exist to provide the principals with a living. Providing jobs is a means to an end, not the other way around. Besides, we already have a minimum wage law in this country.

Asshat is correct. There is already a minimum wage. If that's not sufficient for big retailers, then it's not sufficient for anybody. There is no excuse for making a special minimum wage for facilities with certain dimensions; that's just stupid. What's next, a 'medium wage' for stores between 10,000 and 49,963 square feet?

Typical of Chicago to dick around with this instead of doing something useful, like passing a real smoking ban like every other 'world class' city that it strives to compete with.

Fucking dur, it's not enough. I don't know if anyone likes to pay attention to the fact that people on minimum wage are usually on welfare, but there it is. There used to be a time in this country where a low-level employee could make a living wage without any assistance.

You won't make much of a living from your business if no one can earn enough at their job to actually buy your product. A fair and equitable 'living' wage is in the best interest of those in business as much as those earning it.

Average wage for a Costco worker = $40,000

So don't tell me that the big boxes can't survive if they pay their workers. It's just bullshit fiefdom building.

The government hasn't any right to tell me how to run my business, plain and simple. What I create from my own mind and sweat equity is mine alone. I'd appreciate it if you and Uncle Sam keep your thieving paws off of it. If the marketplace determines that what I pay in wages is insufficient, I'll have trouble finding employees. If it determines that I charge too much for my product, my sales will suffer. I'm either smart enough to keep track of that shit and make the necessary adjustments, or I go under.

nocal: good for Costco. They've got a much different business model than the Walmarts/Targets, and obviously their wage strategy works for them.
