I don't like this at all! They have picked the worst drug they can think of (meth) to get a knee jerk acceptance from the public for this device. Unfortunately in reality it will be busting far more benign recreational drug users than meth crazed uber-junkies. Given the state of the drug laws in most states this will just end up further crowding the correctional & legal system with more low level criminals that otherwise would be productive tax paying citizens.

well, its a known fact that like 99% of all us currency has trace amounts of cocaine residue on it.

this being said with everyone that handles money the residue transfers to your fingers and so on.

So I think this is useless and will not hold up in many cases.

but on the other hand it will give the government (COPS) another reason to search you and your home or car for no reason at all.

Tangent: That 'cocaine on 99% of money' thing has always sounded like bullshit, but I just looked it up, and Snopes at least considers it factual, even using a figure like '4 out of 5 bills', though we're dealing with such minute amounts it must be easily differentiated from its more rewarding uses.

^^ exactly my point! One of my cars is an 82 VW bus. Lord only knows the drugs which at some time have been through the doors of that thing over time. So is bubba the cop is going to bust MY head for someone's slop left in the carpet even though I've only had is for a few months?!? The problem is a device like this gives cops probable cause where they ordinarily wouldn't have any (without lying). Just imagine leaving concert X where 50% of the audience is smoking the reefers, on the way out of the show some cop zaps you with this from 5 feet away and guess what, you just won a personal cavity search innocent or not its just not right IMO.

Well, though it bothers me as well, hopefully there will be some sort of threshold defined so 1/100th of a gram of cola from 1987 doesn't have any bearing on the current situation. Also who knows if said past drug residue will even be detectable with this device..

Also, that cop will legally have to ask for permission to scan you or your car just as he does now to search you. It's just another form of searching.

As I'm sure you know, the best thing to do when getting pulled over besides being a polite ass kisser is to put your keys in your pocket when exiting the vehicle, after locking the doors..
