However, assuming this effect would be repeatable and not due to preparation of the plants themselves, I can think of several possibilities:

1) She microwaved the water in a container (plastic, probably) that leaches out bad stuff when heated/excited

2) Exciting the molecules in the water caused some to cleave, leaving split products that the plant finds icky

3) Exciting the macromolecules in the water allowed them to sequester some vital mineral so the plant couldn't absorb it. Seems unlikely, though.

4) His granddaughter is practicing her academic fraud skills

If I were back home, I would try this experiment out. I think that important info might be the age of said microwave. Maybe the microwave is 25 years old and has a damaged magnetron.

I was thinking something similar. If she heated the other plant's water on the stove, it was in a metal container. She didn't microwave metal, obviously. Hence she was using two different containers, possibly negating her results.

She didn't use the same soil. Even If she had, the soil used a second time would be depleted by whatever the first plant absobed.

The experiment could be refined by using hydroponic techniques.

Also, one plant got purified water and the other she didn't say. If there was a perfectly microwave safe container, then microwaving pure water wouldn't change anything about it.
