| | | WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- James and Sarah Brady made comments today related to Vice President Cheney's reportedly accidental shooting yesterday in Texas.
'Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him,' said Jim Brady. 'I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot.'
'I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time,' Sarah Brady said. 'Now I know I was right to be nervous.'

'Whittington 'came up from behind the vice-president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself,' Armstrong told AP.'

| | | 1) Treat every gun as if it is loaded.
2) Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
4) Be sure of your target, and what is behind your target.
BUT
If Dick yelled 'HE'S COMING RIGHT FOR US!!!' before he shot the guy, it was obviously in self-defense and therefore he's covered.
| |
| | | I don't care if the guy was sneaking up on Cheney in a ninja costume. It doesn't absolve the vp of responsibility. You don't just wheel around and blast, especially low, if you're hunting in a group. Even at 50 yards, which is probably the outside range, there's no way to miss seeing a guy in blaze orange before you pull the trigger (unless you're fucking blind, or your head is up your ass, in which case you have no business being out there). Bottom line, you make sure you know who and what is where before shooting. I'm sure it was accidental, but it's piss poor gun safety. At least he didn't hit the dogs.

| |
| | | how much head start do you think they give Dan Quaile before they hunt him? | | | |
| |
| | | Reportedly the gun was a 28 gauge, which would put the outside range at more like 30 yards. Maybe. Sounds to me like this guy shouldn't be handling a glue gun. | | | |

I would hate the shit out of his job. David Gregory ripped him a new one on this (as well he should have.)

| |
| | | What I see the 4th estate here making the story that the 4th estate was not the very first thing on everyone's mind at the time of this accident.
As if they should be the first priority.
The story evolving is that the press somehow got snubbed for a day or two.
This is not about illegal wire tapping, secret courts, imprisonment without charges, the suspension and/or revocation of the Bill of Rights,or any of the other bits of real fearsome news--the press was not informed.
The little princess' tiara arrived late.
| |
| | | Cheney's target has a heart attack.
Oh Lokes, you poor dear. Offended by the yapping press. Heavens. The White House never made it public. They left it up to the landowner, who notified a local newspaper. There's nothing wrong with that, but when you've got a press corps that's dedicated solely to White House affairs and you decide to (not) handle a White House story in this manner, the press is going to wonder what you're trying to hide. This is the press' job, and I will not fault them for trying to do it. Especially since they've been avoiding their job for 4 years.
| |
| | | Haha. The princess' tiara.
I notice a repeating reference to the old guy getting hit by 'the BBs inside' the shell. As though referencing BBs instead of 'shotgun shell' makes it sound more like child's play or something.
| |
| | | This ABC news story was calling it a 'pellet gun' this morning. It's since been changed to 'shotgun loaded with birdshot'. | | | |
| |
| | | The accident raised questions about Cheney's adherence to hunting safety practices and the White House's failure to disclose the accident in a timely way. There's the news and not the news.
The news: Someone (most probably Cheny) failed to adhere to safe hunting procedure.
The not news: No one thought to tell the precious 4th that this happened--they had to find out, and misreport shit all by themselves.
I agree with you vlad--that the press has not been doing their job--I just don't see why the governement should make any efforts to help them to not do their job.
| |
| | | Yeah, well, the white house press corps has become so ineffectual and docile that they should probably just stop showing up. Save everyone the effort of pretending.
On this Cheney thing. Apparently the white house wanted to get out in front of this story on Saturday, but was overruled by Cheney. That's newsworthy in itself, if only to illustrate who's really in charge. But we knew that.
'Most probably' Cheney? If you shoot your hunting partner or your dog, is it not your fault?
Sounds like this guy is in worse shape than previously indicated.
