It is possible. Look at the current state of events.

Everyone already pays wildly differing costs for different access speeds/types, so the different levels of service idea is nearly in place.

Think of your office network, only on a grand scale, with people paid to watch what is coming through the pipe. My office has about 20 people in it and I can monitor where they are going and what they are doing with little effort, and I am only one person.

I'm wondering how much the RIAA and the MPAA are involved in this behind the scenes. Their current tactic of 'sue the world' has been wildly successful, so why not support an effort to stop it at the server?

Verizon is annoying. They have, by far, the best cellphone service (as rated by consumer reports and my own experience) but they do shit like cripple cell phones. My Nokia that I just got can support MP3 ringtones, but they disabled that feature. So I bought a data cable and enabled it. Also, they removed the basic games that come pre-loaded on Nokias. They do that shit because they want you to buy their crappy 'Get it Now' stuff.

^True. Cingular does the same thing. I just got a Black Razr and the only game they have on the phone is a shitty demo. Cingular didn't block the mp3 ringones, they just dont provide the ability to upload your own. They want you to buy it from them as well.

The amount of money I paid for this phone (and it completely rawks, don't get me wrong) i should be allowed to do anything I want with it.

I too happened to have a compatible data cable and 'found' the motorola phone software so i was able to circumvent their moneygrubbing scheme.

I feel like, in five years, we'll all be wearing masks with slots above our noses, to insert a nickel every time we want to inhale.
