They keep semen swabs in the freezer for decades for murders, but only ten years for rape alone (statute limitations). The same with blood/hair samples. In the last ten or so years the technology to extract and compare has vastly improved, along with the size of the database. Expect to see a lot more cold cases solved, a a few more innocents freed.
