People seem to forget this. NOWHERE in the original war 'plan' were free and fair elections. It looked like we were setting up another junta or proxy dictatorship. Major Iraqi figures like Sistani and others forced the US to hold elections. If the Bush admin would have got its way there would have NEVER been free elections, let alone a democratic government. Democracy in the area is only important cosmetically, the important part of all of this is for Iraq to submit to free trade regulations and stay under the thumb of American military and financial pressure.

Emporers have always preferred to rule by divine right, not popular acclamation, so why would he plan for elections?

The problem with the US and us down under is the lack of an opposition with backbone. Our Opposition 'party' used to have a platform of light socailism and equality, that is gone now and all we have are a disparate bunch of ignorant yes men desparately trying to keep their snouts in the public trough for long enough to qualify for lifetime pensions. We voted Howard in beause we were scared of rising housing interest rates that the govt, in reality, has no control over. WE got the govt we deserve.
