K, i feel better now. | | | |

| |
| | | Fart,
David Cross
Awesome. I keep seeing this 'Larry' fuck on Comedy Central and he's got to be the most uncreative, unfunny, lame-joke, dead-material comedian with that big an audience.
When he's out there dropping his lame pat catchphrases and telling the 'Sears vasectomy garage door remote control' joke, how does he rate the exposure? I can't figure it.
Is Jeff Foxworthy to blame for popularizing this drivel?
| |
| | | I think Cross does a fairly decent job of explaining it. It's an audience that likes simplicity and having their own views confirmed. For some people, a joke that makes them question their views is offensive. For instance, on one of David Cross' stand-up DVDs, they had a cameraman interviewing people who left his show early. One guy leaves and says, 'He just got too political.' It can be political and still funny if you're willing to laugh at yourself. The average NASCAR dad with a 9/11 tattoo of an eagle with a red white and blue tear with osama in its talons just takes himself way too seriously.
Hence, fart jokes. | | | |
| |
| | | I was channel surfing a few days ago and landed at Larry doing a solo routine; he was pretty funny. Don't think I've ever seen Cross - he's probably funny too. What isn't funny is two comedians taking themselves seriously and getting into a snit. | | | |
| |
| | | I beg to differ, it's funny (Cross) AND entertaining (Cross). I downloaded his comedy routine the other day--not knowing too much about him. It was pretty good, this letter cements me as a fan. | | | |
| |
| | | Another good 'long-winded letter' thing that Cross wrote was for Pitchfork Media. | | | |
| |
| | | I've been a big fan of Cross since Mr. Show. Try others like: Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Carlin, Hicks, etc. | | | |
| |
| | | Cross makes cameos in movies that aren't always that entertaining, but his stand-up stuff is good.
Oddly, I saw this Larry person during one of those 'Redneck Comedy Hour' things and he was relatively entertaining, but the only solo act I've seen of his was shit -- but was performed in front of the same sized audience. Maybe he had a material crisis.
| |
| | | I sport a git-r-done lighter with a confederate flag. I think its the most annoying guady piece of shit I've ever seen. However, after about 8-10 drinks, I start thinking its massively funny. | | | |
| |
| | | Regarding Cross: I heard thic CD a long time ago by a David Cross - I don't know if it was the same guy - and it was just this really fucking crazy bizarre piece of a telephone preacher; I can't explain, you just have to hear it.
Looked him up and found he plays Tobias on Arrested Development;
<3 that show.

I've been holding on to exactly this lighter for months now. It was in the impulse buy section of a convenience store in PA. It's meant for Kahuna but I keep forgetting to give it to him.
They had like 15 in the box, one kind with flag, one kind without. The kind with flag was almost sold out. The other kind wasn't touched.
| |
| | | God, I've heard so many people talking about that blue collar comedy sack of shit. I finally sat down & tried to watch it, but jesus fucking christ. The only remotely funny guy was the one with the glass of scotch in his hand, and he only had like a 3/10 funny to shit ratio. | | | |
| |
| | | I think they're both funny. What's pathetic is either one taking themselves, or their craft, too seriously. Methinks they doth protest too much. Go watch 'Comedians of Comedy', boyos - now there's the way to look at funnaY! Funny is funny. I love intellectual comedy and, for a while, blanched at some scatalogical type humor - except, here's the thing... some of it's dead funny. | | | |

And now, here it is, your moment of zen. You can hear the LBP in the background confused by all the appropriately-annoying 'GIT ER DONE! GIT ER DONE!' squawks suddenly emanating from the living room.
My camera's make-video-mode can't focus well on close-up stuff, or you'd see the ' I SAY GIT-R-DONE!' sticker on top in explosive 'EVERYTHING-YOU-EVER-WANTED' style.
KAHUNA, YOU CAN ONLY SALIVATE UNTIL YOU FINALLY RECIEVE THIS PRECIOUS PRIZE!!!1!

| |
| | | I still find Larry the Cable guy funny after all these years, about 15 I think. He would call into WDIZ 100.3 back in Orlando LINKSWARM. Although his material hasn't changed much it is still entertaining. I also find David Cross' TV appearances funny, his stand-up could use some work.
tee hee hee

| |
| | | Since you stepped up to the plate, let me ask you: why is the git-r-done thing funny? What's he referring to? | | | |
| |
| | | Dude, guy with scotch in hand is drop dead hilarious. Like serious. Not 3/10 funny. 10/10 funny. I love that guy. Hate everyone else. | | | |
| |
| | | It's along the same lines as the ever popular movie phrase'Go go go'. Something said right before a job is started.
I don't find that particular phrase funny but when I hear it it brings to mind alot of the jokes he spits out or the memories of being a redneck once myself.
| |
| | | Also, why he says it all the time is still a mystery to me. | | | |
| |
| | | You have to have been raised up redneck to really understand this type of humor. I was and I do. | | | |
| |
| | | Dude, guy with scotch in hand is drop dead hilarious. Like serious. Not 3/10 funny. 10/10 funny.
I'm inclined to agree. He displays a kind of marksman delivery at times.
| |
| | | I was raised around rednecks. I understand this type of humor. It sucks leaky ass.
Also, the Cross thingy says Larry the Cable Guy is not from the South and he went to a private school. It's just an act, like Marilyn Manson or Mitch Hedburg.
That's the whole point. Not whether he is funny or not, but he is a poser claiming to be a champion of Southern values in a world where people like David Cross are threatening them.
| |
| | | At least I've heard Mitch Hedburg say funny things, whether or not he was ripping off Steven Wright's act.
I think nocal's first comment nails it on the head - same reason Bush is so popular in the south. Dude was born into a family of oil millionaires, went to Yale & belonged to a super-exclusive frat. But speak like a dullard and pose in a pickup truck on your sprawling ranch once in a while and america's dumbfuck belt falls in love with you.

For a guy with Dumbskull's old avatar, you're making alot of sense.

| | | Lownotes: Also, the Cross thingy says Larry the Cable Guy is not from the South and he went to a private school. It's just an act, like Marilyn Manson or Mitch Hedburg.>/i>
Of course it's an act - they are spoofing the stereotype, not glorifying it. That's as it should be. Also, Marilyn Manson is not an actor - just a poser. (Never heard of Mitch Hedburg - thx for the warning.)

| |
| | | Political humor can be VERY funny, but there is a thin line between, OMG HE GOT 'EM GOOD LOL and Jeanine Garafalo, who stopped being funny and started sounding more like a whiney baby than a comedian.
Dennis Miller and Bill Maher do this a lot... they get away from the jokes and just start talking.
| |
| | | Let me pitch in as a former comedian.
Blue Collar TV is crap, and it's very sad to see Foxworthy and this Larry guy sell out completely and submit themselves to the scripts of other writers. They should be writing their own material throughout, not occasionally.
Larry the Cable Guy's public persona is full of redneck pomposity, but it's just a business model. He can produce quality jokes and puns, i.e. 'Schinder's Ass' to describe a woman's gigantic ass (ostensibly roomy enough for smuggling jews).
| |
| | | you all have no idea of comedy. i am ashamed and sad that i hang out with you folks and you talk shit about the blue collars. Larry the Cable Guy, Mr. Foxworthy, Ron White are some great fucking people. The fourth dude, not so much. Listen to there shit its funny. David Cross..I dont know about him to much. I think he is just pissed. | | | |
| |
| | |
yeah, I totally learned what to avoid.

| | | There is a specific class of commenter on this link that needs addressing. Those of you saying things like 'comedians who take themselves seriously' or such similar derisions... um. You're dumb AND stupid. How do you think they get and stay funny? By taking it seriously. It's their job. I hope my doctor takes his job seriously, too. And I think comedy itself deserves to be taken very seriously. Ever hear that old bit about 'them thar terrerists, they're so screwed up cuz they gots no sense of humor!' Well, Larry the Cable Guy's audience can't laugh at itself any more than Osama's audience can. Rednecks take themselves DEADLY seriously, as serious as a heart attack, and will beat the cockfucking shit out of anyone who doesn't fit in with them. Of course, the 'ultra-liberal hippie faggot left' is the same way, the only difference being they can't do more than slapfight like sissies. Anyway the point is, Larry can be funny, but Cross is god damn hysterical, and it's Cross who takes humor more seriously (Larry takes the business OF humor most seriously, hence the canned act). There's a link there. | | | |

| | | I was just browsing the SA forums, and someone posted a thread about this. I was surprised to read many people either defending Larry or calling Cross a douchebag. I expected most people to pretty much agree with Cross. Plus, the letter is funny. | | | |

| | | I mean, no one can blame you for taking the Wal-Mart approach of appealing to the absolute stupidest, water-brained Velveeta cheese flag-monkeys on the planet - no offense - but what you've gone and done is given them something to *say*. Out loud.
Maybe I just don't get it, but I thought that Larry and Co. were making fun of the whole redneck image thing. No? Does this guy *really* think that he (LCG) is a proponent of white trash wisdom? He comes over as having a chip on his shoulder the size of Alabama. Get real (or a sense of humor), dude.

Yeah, I think you don't really get it. They make fun of rednecks much the same way a big brother picks on his younger siblings, or the way Richard Pryor makes fun of niggers. It's okay because he's 'one of them.' It's a 'poking fun at these traits we share' kind of comedy.
