I am thinking this 'code' was a fake designed to fish out rogue operators. KGB used the same tactic of 'mistakenly' including secret activation and cypher codes in some equipment manuals, just to see who might use them or which country's spy agency will end up in their possession. The equipment may even appear to accept these codes just to lull their users into thinking they are the real deal.
These folks are not nearly as dumb as this article makes them look. In the counter- intelligence community, peppering the paperwork with traps for tracking and exposing enemy agents is norm.
