My dad has perfect pitch. He used to be a concert pianist before he made the odd switch to engineering (being of the mind that there w3as no money in being a pianist). Anyways, He can listen to a song and then just play it on the piano which was pretty cool growing up cause we had a baby grand with real ivory keys. He also used to play the guitar and Basoon and clarinet.
Anyways, when I was growing up (like 13 or so when I started guitar), I could ask him anything about a song that I had on CD and he'd say, oh well let me see. The chord structure is this and etc etc.
However, when we moved to Saudi, he baught a piano for $300 bucks cause he didn't want to risk shipping the baby grand. It had something inside that was bent so it couldn't be tuned quite correctly.
Point is. This man could hear a note or even a chord and tell you what it was. Yet he had this piano for 10 years that was constantly slightly out of tune. He played anyways!!!!! It didn't have to be perfect. He just needed something to play his Beethoven on and occasionally some billy joel when I could convince him to do it.
Sorry, music threads make me ramble. You know what though. The really funny thing is my Mother is literally tone def. My dad didn't believe in it. He sat down for a couple of weeks and try to get her to reproduce notes that he played by singing them. Then he had her turn away and he'd play a note and then he'd have her find it. She never could find the right one, even though she was sure the one she picked or sang was the correct note. He eventually gave up.
