Why is this surprising? Any institution of that age, in a Southern state, would have this sort of thing in it's history. This was the socially accepted norm for the time and place, and as such is nothing that should be a cause of embarrassment for the current administration. The 'sins' of the fathers cannot be visited on the sons in matters like this. History is just that, history- dead and gone. There is no point to any retroactive manumission or appologies to those long dead, or to their decendants.
