facial expression is part of communication in ASL - less so in signed english. I know that sometimes advanced signers will leave out qualifiers like 'sad', 'happy' or 'mad' and simply express that with their expressions. Then again, some people don't use expressions, and prefer to sign everything. Depends how fast you want to get your point across.
