Methane trapped under the ocean. Every so often, an earthquake releases large fields of the mineral to cause major kinetic releases, like the ones in the Bermuda Triangle that sink ships. (Large fields of bubbles reduce water density, causing the craft to sink like a raisin in alka-seltzer)
Global warming is caused by the mass of simian life fucking up the oil/atmosphere/carbon cycle. This, in theory, could cause near immediate (1 1/2 to 2 years) extinction.
