Never, and I mean NEVER confuse the old ways with all ways. The thing you got to realize is that there are two branches of any religion and culture: the orthodox and reformist.
In many ways, orthodox branches are truly monstrous, but that is the only way they are able to survive modern times: by imposing strict adherence to the olden ways, with severe punishments. I wish these dinosaurs would just die.
However, on the right side, you have the reformist branches, which do allow progressive thinking and culture. They are there because people reach for them, because minds and hearts evolve. I, for example, know at least a dozen of muslim folks (living here in America) whose integrity and openness set quite an example.
