These are not fake. The beatings are not severe becasue they do not want to kill (a much more severe criminal offense), just to inflict pain. A full-swing soccer kick to the ribcage can puncture the heart with bone shards; a strong kick can rupture the spleen and any other internal organ, leading to death. That carries a 15-20 sentence, I believe, and Russian prisons are truly a death ticket because of overcrowding and infectious tuberculosis.
