MEXICO CITY, Mexico (FNN 24/7) -- The Mexican government is defending a postage stamp they've issued depicting an exaggerated black cartoon character known as Memin Pinguin, saying although the stamp may be racially insensitive, it won't pose a problem.
'The only time blacks are likely to even see these stamps is when they get overdue bill notices in the mail,' said Carlos Caballero, assistant marketing director for the Mexican Postal Service. 'That's not going to happen everyday.'
Caballero said he could understand the outrage if the image had been issued on food stamps. 'Then it would be in their face all the time. I could see how that might be hurtful,' he said.
Mexican president Vicente Fox agreed that blacks would rarely see the offending stamps.
'Who ever looks at stamps, anyway?' he said. 'Well, obviously, mail handlers see stamps a lot, but that's a job not even black people would take.'
