in high school i spent a summer castrating sheep and pigs. didn't pay much, but at least i got to hurt animals.

Two things immediately came to mind:

Believe me, the horses are better for it. More tractable, eat better, no fighting. Using the old surgical method, I have assisted in various surgeries on horses, seen 'em get up & run around with no apparent discomfort after a few minutes.
Perhaps as much as 90% of racehorses are gelded, better and safer on them, the other horses and the handlers.
I wonder how many guys have tried to make their own tool like that w/ disastrous results.
