Nah the spinning blades act as a fixed wing, a normal copter has blades that 'bite' the air, the downward pull og gravity and air resistance/friction cause the blades to spin. The same concept is used in the autorotation maneuver for emergency helicopter landings.

They have some of these things out in my area. Every six months or year or so someone crahes one into a mountain or manages to get decapitated. Isn't garage tech fun?

They've had these things in kit form since the 60's in Popular Mechanics, and yes, every so often someone crashes and dies. The hard part nowdays is finding airspace to fly in our ever increasing urban world.
