Wait, what exactly did they think the students were doing?

They basically did a 'preemptive strike'. Most of these kids weren't rioting like in previous years and they just continously shot tear gas at specific people, even thos simply walking home.

Franklin street about went up in flame's after the game the other night. Tear gas would have made more sense there.

~ 8 months ago, I might have been able to give the police the benefit of the doubt--I just happen to know much better now.

The nature of their work does not excuse their heavy-handed behavior.

Every cop is trouble. They are either violent neanderthals, or the facilitators of these violent neanderthals.

I have come to realize that I have met only four kinds of cop. The cop who takes pleasure in beating his prisoner, the cop who holds the prisoner to facilitate the beating, the cop who turns a blind eye to the beating, and the cop who defends the beating with 'you have no idea what the job entails.'

To put this in to perspective, Chapel Hill had a much bigger 'riot' complete with bonfires, etc. I don't know of anyone being hurt besides people probably being arrested. Around 20,000 people ended up downtown, basically what its like on halloween, and they certainly didn't expierience what MSU did.

I found out a couple of months ago that the town bully when I was a kid is now the chief of police.....I will stay out of Byram, NJ.

I once had a pair of lowlife sperm accidents break into my apt while I was away--they didn't really get it in, since they lacked brains--the door was left unlocked though [gotta love that]. so the cops get called by the neighbors and THE COPS STEAL MY SHIT! I had a box of loose change a good 10 pounds worth of coinage [us-crap not the queen mother shit]...

I had that same thing happen to a friend of mine, only the cops insisted on arresting him first on a trumped-up domestic abuse charge to get him out of the house. On the way out, he heard one mutter to the other 'tv vcr stereo' but didn't think anything of it. He was released the next day and came home to find himself bereft of several expensive things.

Oh and p.s., yeah cops suck, but is getting rid of a few bad cops worth the tradeoff of a completely broken social order where lawlessness is the rule? I know, Loki, you'll argue that the 'strong will survive' - but we all know that's a load of crap. The politically connected will survive, not the individually 'strong,' so again - is it worth the price to eliminate a mildly corrupt justice system for complete lawlessness? Or, alternatively, can the justice system be 'fixed' and become less corrupt?

I'd gladly argue that point, but only for entertainment purposes, or to actually demonstrate that it is 'a load of carp.' ;D

But we're not talking about a 'few bad cops.' At leat not if 'we' includes me. And we are talking about some pretty fuking pervasive lawlessness by the police. It's not 'mild' corruption. It's fundamental corruption. It's wide-spread thuggery.

So to answer you question; yes. Yes, I would certainly rather have this 'lawlessness' in exchange for lawlessness in the guise of law.

The problem is, as usual, we give the power to the people who want it most, thereby building into the selection process a filter that actively selects people who want to wield super-citizen powers. Who wants to wield these powers? Apparently, a lot of the time, the people who least should have them.

I don't think I'd suggest total lawlessness as a recourse, though. There has to be a middle ground between empowering bullies and destroying the police force. How about stricter applicant review processes? How about greater accountability for cops who screw up? Just to start with.
