On the one hand the military really is running out of recruits and they need people desperately and soon. Starting up the draft is the best way to do that. But I think the political backlash from a move like that would be so hard that it could force a party out of office. I know I'm not going.

Righties are not the only ones trying to generate irrational fear to control public opinion. Who's going to vote to re-instate the draft? Last time it was put to a vote, just this last October, it was defeated 402 to 2 in the House. What has changed since then? If the military needs more troops, the more likely outcome is that the ranks of security contractors swell, perhaps with a bump in salary.

To my knowledge, this is blatantly false. I saw a tally several months after hostilities started, and white middle-class boys were the ones dying in disproportionate numbers. Minorities are disproportionately represented as military personnel, but not in deaths. My interpretation of this has always been that lower-class minorities see the military as a career path, and one which they'd like to see the end of; whereas middle-class honkies are more prone to see it as an adventure and chance for heroism, and opt for combat duties.

I heard about this last year, when a bill was written for reinstating the draft. There was a ton of info on it at the time; there would be no exceptions except in terms of age, etc. However, people jumped down my throat about the fact that it was written by democrats, likely an excuse to scare the shit out of people and to have them vote democrat. While not feasable, I wouldn't necessarily say it's impossible that the draft will be reinstated. After all, what they're doing now is forcing guys to take second and third tours and forcing younger guys out of military retirement while cutting veterans benefits.

Oh I should add this though: keep in mind that what the military often lacks is not poor saps to shoot at shit. It lacks often in engineering jobs, etc, the shit that people go to college for instead of the army. As most of you in the 'Swarm seem to be very intelligent people, you would probably not see combat and would instead be in office jobs and shit.
