I thought it was fairly common knowledge that bacteria can survive extended periods while frozen... This seems to have fuck all to do with life on mars. Just another bloated NASA egghead trying to drum up publicity.
Finding bacterial life on mars wouldn't surprise me one bit, especially if there is indeed liquid water present. The problem is going to be (1) bringing back a viable sample of martain soil to study and (2) culturing martian bacteria under lab conditions.
