| | | Thompson has identified the death of the American Dream as his reporters beat, and has covered the subject in one fashion or another throughout his writing. During an interview with salon.com, however, Thompson was asked whether he was not, in fact, the living embodiment of the classic American Dream. He answered the question by first screaming a string of frustrated obscenities and then admitting that, in actuality, he probably was. | | | |

We are loosers, and this is the only sin in america which is unforgiven' | | | |

| | | what a drag - i hope he left some kind of explanation. I was fortunate to see him in a club about 15 years ago. He was incoherent (a product of the jack that never left his hand) and i left feeling a bit ripped off. All those assholes interrupting him with their own demonstrations or proof that they read at least one of his books or articles. I know he would have been a cfascinating person to meet on eon one. there's no question he was a bit of a mess - but got-dam he was funny and he had his finger on pulse of the big pile of shit this country's becoming. The dude was gifted and there won't be another. I'm going to have a bourbon in his honor while i re-read the curse of lono...

| | | 'We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like 'I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive....' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: 'Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?''
You will be missed HST. | | | |

| | | Damn...very sad. HST was a unique and unforgettable voice in the literary and counterculture worlds, and will always be one of my heroes. I plan to set aside a special day to trip in his honor. RIP Gonzo. | | | |

| | | Somewhere around 1976-77 I was living with a Viet Nam Vet (the first true alcooholic I ever lived with) and he handed me 'Fear & Loathing' and five peyote buttons. I walked to the beach and read the whole thing through non-stop. How can you NOT be affected for life by that?
