The
Project on Government Oversight (POGO) notes that the Department of Defense has taken steps to avoid the criticisms of the overpricing that happened during spending increases of the 1980s. Specifically, 'The Defense Department...blacks out the names of specific spare parts that [are] grossly overpriced.'
The abuses are still going on, however: 'A Defense Department January 1999 report reveals that defense money continues to be wasted on spare parts, just as it was in the 1980s... [For example,] AlliedSignal corporation was found to have overcharged the government for spare parts by as much as 618%.'
Perhaps more important today are the reasons behind the decisions that the Department makes regarding new weapons technology: 'POGO's investigations show that private financial interests rather than national security needs all too often drive the Pentagon's decisions about which weapons to buy.'
