johnwc723, FYI
'awesome
adj : inspiring awe or admiration or wonder; 'New York is an amazing city'; 'the Grand Canyon is an awe-inspiring sight'; 'the awesome complexity of the universe'; 'this sea, whose gently awful stirrings seem to speak of some hidden soul beneath'- Melville; 'Westminster Hall's awing majesty, so vast, so high, so silent' [syn: amazing, awe-inspiring, awful, awing]'

Dictionary, learn to use it asshat.

weird tangent thought: when i first heard the report of a tsunami, they gave the estimate at 20,000 dead. I tried to imagine 20,000 marbles or pennies, or anything. i couldn't do it. Then I thought 'It's just water, how could people die?' The video's on the news don't show it, but the water was going about 500 MPH. In this picture, those people are battered and ripped up. Must of been one fucked up ride.

They even had a tidal surge on the coast of Western Australia. The damage and deaths from this one are going to leave the '70s floods in Bangladesh etc. in the realms of an overflowed bath-tub. Most of it is the indirect fault of the western world ( you and me ) for insisting on cheap luxury resorts in exoctic places for our holidays. If it was still small, timber-and-grass villages, the people wouldn't have been there in the first place, and the construction materials would have had much less of an effect in trapping them.

I respectfully disagree, comrade. We are talking about a fisheries based economy. The fact that I want to go to Thailand cheaply for 12 yr old whores has nothing to do with it. Ok, maybe a little.

We're getting weird flotsm here in Morro Bay like trpoical wood and painted scraps only three days later. To live on the edge of the water like I do makes me nervous, especially with the seismic activity we have around here.
I've heard from locals that when the big quake hit Anchorage in '64(don't quite remember it myself) that Crescent City got a big wave that took out a good part of downtown and it hit the Bay down here. At that time we had seveal Oyster Farmers in the Bay, and the Wave came over the Sand Spit and washed the Oysters from one Bed to another. There was a shotgun feud for years after that. Is an Oyster from your Bed that washed into their mud still yours? The answer was found in 1880 sheep laws dealing with stays and flock wandering. Half & half for grazing rights!
I'm hoping that the shape of the bottom, along with the local history, will keep me from being swept out like a flush in a toilet bowl.

But you never know....

Well, now she is.

People come an people go, anyway, there are some interesting facts
connected to such big mass mortality:
1) In germany they have stopped sending songs with any relations to water, waves aso..... (Idiots!)
2) Nearly no dead animals (the sixth sense?)
3) The whole earth is beeing monitored constantly, its hard to imagine that nobody noticed something. Its so easy, somebody pushes a button and in Asia the alarm sirenes turn on. Why not?

IIRC, you can't actually predict when a quake is going to happen, you can only monitor them as they happen, so if you detect an offshore quake, you've only got minutes to warn people before effects may be felt (i.e. too late).

http://economist.com/printedition/displaystory.cfm?Story_ID=3518475

The Indian Ocean tsunami has been called the world's worst ever natural disaster. In terms of cold statistics, that is wrong, even as the estimated death toll climbs well past 50,000. Other earthquakes have killed more, especially in poor and populous countries such as China: probably 600,000 or more in Tangshan in 1976, and 200,000 or so on two occasions in the 1920s. Iran lost an estimated 50,000 people to a quake in 1990 and a further 26,000 in Bam exactly a year ago to the day, on December 26th 2003. It is not even the Indian Ocean's deadliest disaster, for cyclones have often brought worse, most notoriously in 1970 when the then new state of Bangladesh lost about 500,000 people.

36,417

one factor in distinguishing this event is not necessarily the number of people affected, but that the destruction is spread out over some 9 countries, many of them very remote, unconnected by roads, inaccessible to aid services.

I hope our presedent and his administration truly appreciate the world support it has the opportunity to harness right now, for a fraction of what it spends monthly on protection of crude assets . seems like a pretty shrewd investment - but will they take it?

Not FACE DOWN.... FACE OFF.
As if typical with friction disasters (shipwrecks, floods, train wrecks, plane wrecks, etc) if anything is whole, the extremities are usually detached.
