Sarah Palin has inspired editorials, blog posts, investigations and dispatches galore since her announcement as the Republican vice-presidential nominee four weeks ago. Now she’s the subject of a nude portrait, unveiled Thursday and drawing crowds to the Old Town Ale House on Chicago’s North Side. (Uncensored painting can be seen here. -Ed.)
The four-foot-tall oil painting depicts the current governor of Alaska standing atop a polar bear-skin rug in her living room, nude, except for a pair of red stiletto heels and her trademark eyeglasses. In the picture she leans on an automatic rifle while beaming a megawatt smile. Behind her, a window looks out onto a pristine Alaska landscape, complete with a moose that has just ambled into the frame.
The portrait fits right in at the ale house (Yelp reviews), a dark and famously dingy bar frequented by Second City performers and crew, whose walls are adorned with more than 200 paintings of bar regulars and well-known Chicagoans, often engaged in various sexual acts. The Palin portrait has quickly become the bar’s star attraction, drawing a steady stream of picture-snapping admirers. According to the hand behind this and the rest of the paintings, former golf hustler and bar co-owner Bruce Elliott, his latest piece is even pulling in regulars from rival establishments.
"It’s been very successful," Elliott said, "Generally what I do is sex, but I think I’m going to do a little more politics."
The idea for the painting came to him a week earlier when he noticed his daughter Grace, who works behind the bar, was performing an uncanny Sarah Palin impression.
"My daughter is a heck of a stand-in for Sarah Palin. She can even do the voice," he said.
Elliott employed his daughter as the model for Palin’s body and drew on photo references to depict her from the neck up. While many women might cringe at the idea of posing nude for their fathers, Grace proudly informs gawkers that they’re staring at her body up on the wall.
"He changed my diapers," she said with a shrug. "Think about it like that."
Elliott, who says he’s pulling for Barack Obama in the election, worked on the portrait for seven to eight hours a day for a week. While the piece qualifies as a quick grab for attention, it’s also very much the creation of someone immersed in the coverage of Palin, whom he refers to as “a real nasty piece of work” while also admitting feeling attracted to her.

"I wanted to get that smirk she does in the magazines and I just kind of drew it and drew it until it came together," he said. "That smirk says ‘I was the town whore in high school and look where I’ve gone.’"
The Shoes"I think Maureen Dowd mentioned that she wore harlot red stiletto heels," he said. "I had to get those in."
"I wanted to draw the most awful-looking gun ever," she said. "She’s really into hunting. If I could give her a bazooka, I would."
The Moose"The moose is there because it realizes she’s going to turn around and blow his brains out," he said.
The Rug"The polar bear is there because she doesn’t believe in global warming and the polar bear will go extinct because of it," he said. "I thought it was a nice touch."
"I really don’t think too much about taste," Elliott says when asked about reaction to the work. "I’d like to offend somebody. I would love it if the secret service called me up.”
Elliott says the painting, like the rest in the ale house, is not for sale. And he says no amount of money could lure him into painting another version of it. The bar owner hopes someone turns the image into a college dorm room poster someday.
"I don’t see how she could be offended by this," he said. "I made her into a sex figure."
Though he hopes to paint more political figures, Elliott says he’s stumped as to who to do next. He’s mulling over the idea of a Bush family portrait.

I saw this the other night and was completely grossed out by it. My boyfriend disagreed, telling me to shut it. Not the best way to start an evening I think you'd agree.

You sound like you have a really advanced sense of humor. Let me know when you want to go out for drinks because you seem like loads of fun.

your boyfriend is right! this is a beautiful painting. and there's nothing wrong with the fact that his daughter, a grown woman and beautiful, was the model.

This guy ruined the Ale House. It didn't need "character" with his sex-obsessed painting and stupid satellite radio.

That isn't Sarah Palin! That's Peggy Hill, Hank's wife. :)

Ha! So true. I was going to say I thought the facial resemblance wasn't all that strong.

Just more sad, angry Modern Liberals. To learn why Modern Liberals are as goofy as they are, watch the video "HOW MODERN LIBERALS THINK" on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaE98w1KZ-c
It's very, very good. You'll need some quiet time as it's serious. For those of you who find them confusing, this video explains a lot. The speaker, Evan Sayet, used to be a writer for Bill Maher. I can't recommend it enough. Thanks

How much you all wanna bet this guy has some kind of sweetheart deal to keep his bar open? How much does he bribe his alderman, including to make sure he gets no competition?

SteveIL. That's an interesting question. Check out the onion's chicago bar map to see where the other nearby bars are. He's certainly not the only guy in that area:

Oh, don't knee-jerkedly attribute this to "modern liberals". This is one guy. It's no different than branding all "modern conservatives" by the standard set by Rush Limbaugh.

Neocon supporters can blow me. "Modern Liberals" weren't the cause of our current financial crisis. It was the neocons. They preached de-regulation and now we're in some serious shit. Have you noticed that the last "Tax and spend" liberal to be in white house actually balanced the budget and created a surplus? Under Bush I, Reagan, and Bush II, we've gone trillions of dollars deep.
It's not just that it's an awful plan... it's that these guys always say they're all about cutting back spending and moving toward smaller government, and then they get into office and do another thing entirely.
I don't care whether you're republican or democrat as long as you've got a head on your shoulders... but if you actually buy the crap these neocons have been telling you from decades about "trickle down economics" and all that; or--for that matter--if you think, say, "the liberal media" is actually liberal like they say on FOX news, then you are an idiot. I don't care what party you are.
The major political division in this country isn't between democrats and republicans. It's between morons and people who can still think for themselves.

Your comments are dead-on! I could not have said it better myself. The big difference seems to be between the illiterate idiots and those who read, digest and consider a variety of points of view. It kind of makes you wonder why we all have the right to vote, and I say that knowing full well about the abuses minorities have suffered at the polls in the past. But for God's sake, people ought to have some working understanding of how our government is structured before going into a polling booth.
Thanks for your insightful comment.

I've never been to the Old Town Ale House, and I probably am not going to go any time soon. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it's a decent establishment, and I thought the picture was pretty funny, clever, and satirical...and that's about it.
I don't see why this is a big deal; if one chooses to be in the public eye, then they must be willing to accept praise as well as rotten tomatoes. I'm sure we can find unflattering caricatures, renderings, and recreations of most politicians, celebrities, etc. It is only one man's reaction and work; is he not allowed to display it in his own establishment (of all places)? Do we not live in a so-called "free society" where opinions and speech are welcomed? Or is it as long as they don't offend (or raise too many questions?)
sandrine: I'm sorry about your argument w/your bf.
Dude: If you watch Sarah Palin, she does carry herself in an overly-sexual demeanor. It may or maynot be to her advantage.
Neal Campbell: I agree that Peggy Hill is a good visual caricature of Palin.
Ian4d: Agreed.
Alz: I could only watch about 5 minutes of that video, the speaker only gives his un-researched opinions, narratives, and feelings. I would really hope that this isn't what converted you to some sort of "conservative-ism". How about your opinion instead of a comedian's?
SteveIL: Have you been to that area, there are plenty of places to get a drink. Just because there are abuses and corruption in this city (and others) doesn't mean that it's under every rock and behind every tree. Sometimes a bar is a bar and the owner puts up a piece of (objectionable?) art.
Brad Flora: Good call.
Dude (again?): Agreed.
Merps: Yes, they are boobs.
kev: some rambling, but some good points. Don't be offended, obviously I ramble too. It's a good thing, talk, conversation, getting people to think for themselves as you say.
bradadad: Lets keep the conversation open, maybe, just maybe we can get to where we want to be (with everybody at the table).
What I'm getting it is that we don't really need to get angry about this painting or anything in politics really. What's the point? We as people should be coming together and setting the example that we want our politicians to follow. Politicians (of both parties) generally sway with the wind. If we're divided, so are our leaders. If we're getting this acidic over a painting, then how can all of us reasonably discuss real issues? We keep looking to our leaders to solve our problems. Well, how can they when we can't even reach a consensus or even civility between ourselves. It's gotten so bad that our maps are divided as well as us: blue states, red states, urban, suburban, rural, coastal, beltway, elite, bible-thumper, fat-cat, welfare queen, hockey mom, nascar dad, kmart mom, wholefoods mom...it doesn't end. We need to come out of our labels, groups, and cliques and start dealing with each other instead of being scared to death of each other.
I realize this may reach beyond the article and its comments, but I think it's worth saying...somewhere...even if I get blasted for it at least I can accept it once I put myself out there.

Sorry, aracona posted, while I was writing my reply (in novel form) haha.
aracona: why is someone's perceived political lean a bad thing? I may not agree with what one says, however discounting them doesn't help anyone.
Also, I forgot to add a disclaimer that all I've said above is "within reason" I'm sure some wise guy will come up w/some argument saying something like "you can't talk to someone reasonably if they want to kill you and your family" or something extreme like that. And while they may be right, it's not really that applicable to discussing politics....and kind of just wastes time.
Haha, but I apparently have too much cause it's too late to be up typing, good night.

Deregulation is not really a problem in itself. That is, it wouldn't be if the dem jackasses that were in charge of these two failed institution were not corrupt throughout and they were instrumental in turning down any oversight attempt. Neocons or paleocons had nothing to do with it, rather they were trying to push some form of control.
So, you, bradadad, can scream "neocons" from the top of your lungs, but that does not make it true.
Actually, it would be more accurate to call "neocons" "former liberals", as not all of them became conservatives--some have acquired more libertarian views.
9 weeks 21 hours ago
As anyone who has visited Kos or DU knows, the liberals have the foulest mouths and least tolerance of any group in our political landscape. Despite the fact that they all seem to move only in ideological lockstep, I'd be a lot more likely to listen to them if they didn't constantly demonstrate the truth of the axiom that profanity is the last refuge of the illiterate.
Billingsgate and rudeness isn't going to persuade me of anything except the limited intelligence of the perpetrator. Yes, kev and bradadad, I'm talking about you. If that's the best you can do to persuade others to your point of view, you're in awfully sad shape and probably beyond redemption. I am, however, certain that Michael Moore enjoys the company...
9 weeks 18 hours ago
It is strange how no one is talking about how we got to the finacial crisis. The democrats, and quite a few republicans leaned on mortgage companys back in the Clinton years and forced, through regulation and tax breaks, loan companys to loan money to people who could not pay it back. If you have Lexis Nexis then lokk up 'redlining' back in mid ninties. Congress brought this on us. It wasn't all democrats. it wasn't many republicans. But it was enough of both sides who thought they knew better than the home loan industry than the people in the industry. So a lot of bad loads were given out to people who could not afford them. Variable rate loans were given to people who could not possibly afford the increasing rates. Congress did this. Not republicans, not democrats, both sides forced this on us by 'regulating' the loan industry and forcing bad paper to be written. And those impossible loans were largely given to investors and not to first home buyers. Congress has brought this on us. Congress wants to get a bunch of earmarks loaded into the releif bill that congress shouldn't be doing in the first place but Congress recognizes this is the result of their own policies. The sub-prime crisis is owned by congress. They caused it. In 2003 Bush pushed a bill to address the looming crisis and democrats, sticking fingers in their ears went, 'LALALALALALALA'. In 2005, McCain tried to get bi-partisan support to prevent this crisis which anyone could see looming and inevitable. Democrats again refused to see any problem, "Not happening!" they said again and refused to consider any bill to fix the looming problems.
Pelosi can lie all she wants but the problem is not in Bush's economic policies. If it were up to Bush he would have fixed this and prevented it in 2003 or in 2005 when McCain tried again. It took twenty years for sub-prime loans to cripple the loan industry. Congress allowed this to happen. There is plenty of blame for both sides but only republicans have been trying over and over to prevent the crisis we see today while democrats repeatedly have said, "No problem here move along... " Democrats are playing politics and republicans are trying to keep the economy working. Democrat politicians all beleive that money is not created but rather they beleive it is distributed. Idiots every one of them.

How much for the painting? It will go perfect with my nude of Biden in pigtails and Baby Spice flip flops, holding a magic wand.
I went to the link at http://www.oldtownalehouse.net/ to check out all the art (and there's a full, unedited pic posted there).
My observations, since you are giving yours:
A) You have the same amount of painting talent as my ten year old.
B) It appears as a failed artist, you started a bar in order to forcefeed your poor artwork to patrons.
C) Your mannish daughter is too chubby to be a Palin stand-in, and your statement that she is perfect merely lends additional credence to my assessment that you have the artistic eye of a ten year old.
D) Regardless of political views - now that this story has posted, I can guarantee that all of your patrons will, at the very least, look at you and your daughter a little differently even if they don't voice it.
E) Tell the truth...this was originally just a painting you wanted of your daughter on a bear rug for over your bed, then you thought it would be funny to try and change her face to Palin's and add a gun.

What a pitiful painting. It looks like a coloring book drawing. When I first looked at it I thought, "Why the naked painting of Peggy Hill?" After reading the article I see how much of a sicky this "?artist?" really is.
I have seen better depictions of female bodies on the walls of truck stop restrooms!!!!

Next: Nude Painting of Michelle Obama!
Fair is Fair, let's not discriminate. A nude painting of Michelle Obama should be placed right next to the Palin Painting. Let's see who gets more upset over the nude painting? Republican camp would look at the Palin painting as poor media hype. The Obama camp would probably lynch the owner and fire bomb the bar, LMAOROTF!

Victor:
A) I can't comment on his talents. I can't draw a circle.
B) he didn't start he bar, but either bought it/was given it by the late owners (not sure of the exact story but there was an article about it in the paper). Like I said before, his "personal touch" to the bar (more dumb ass paintings like this of bar regulars and patrons in sexual modes, satellite radio jazz instead of just letting the juke box play) have ruined it for me, but I'm just one person. The bar is always packed in the evening and he's making money so I guess he's happy.
C) haven't met the daughter. never there when I've gone in in the evenings.
D) agreed. Yes I may be a prude, but it's a little weird to me to paint your adult daughter nude, especially for some craptacular painting. Michaelangelo, maybe, but this guy?...
E) wouldn't know about this, but it's funny.

I honestly don't see why anyone is offended by this painting. The idea behind it, maybe. But not the painting itself. Mostly you just got to feel sorry for the guy for thinking he's a talented artist. You can find better "art" in a coloring book. It is funny how he wants to offend people though, funny in a really sad sort of way.

The paintings on the walls of this bar are hardly no-name patrons. Most of the paintings are of famous people who have got their start at Second City. Aykroyd, Belushi and others (some more famous than others) adorn the walls, and it's considered an honor for someone from Sec. City to get their portrait.
The other paintings are more random; some more funny or pornographic than others. I hope they don't become too political...most things lose their raw humor when they do.

From a Chicago Reader profile of Elliott and his wife:
He’s a little circumspect at first when asked how he earned a living after college. “I just always seemed to have money in my pocket,” he says. When pressed, he explains that over the years he made money through “more than 30 personal-injury lawsuits"...
http://www.chicagoreader.com/features/stories/oldtownalehouse/
What also strikes me odd is how Elliott can label Palin the former "town whore" wearing "harlot red stiletto heels" while using his own daughter as the nude model. It
s funny how only conservatives can be whores and harlots, but using his daughter to pose as the object of his erection is not only acceptable, but worth celebrating.

The painting in and of itself is fine, amateurish as it is. It's the old fart who painted it that's the "nasty piece of work," however. While hanging his tongue out over Palin, he nevertheless has a burr up his ass about her. Oooh, hurts so good, now, doesn't it, Elliott? The concept of art involving the terms 'portrait' and 'oil painting' certainly did not prepare me for the apparition depicted. I was prepared for a work of 'art' and sat in shock to see something which could more appropriately be attributed to a group of marginally talented third graders. Perhaps an inappropriate subject matter for that age group, but just as immature in the level of talent.

Now, I'm all for Obama, but this nude drawing of Palin is just wrong. She's a woman...sure. She's not the smartest woman running...sure. But that doesn't give anyone the right to disrespect her in this manner. Men don't get done like this and this is wrong. I don't appreciate this shovanistic behavior. Joking around with sound bytes or portraying political candidate in a comedic light is ok, but to be sexist about it makes me angry. I'm not Palin's fan, but this is down right disrespectful and tasteless to her as a woman and a poltical candidate. Hell, I'm offended and I'm not even Sarah.

Hey...just because this slime-ball tavern owner is lusting after his own Daughter and evidently enjoys his constant state of arousal, why in the world would he connect it up with Sarah Palin?? Good thing he named this untalented monstrosity of a "painting", because it looks like it was made in 2nd grade with silly paint, and certainly can't be recognized as SP, with her charm, intelligence, and classy looks so prominately displayed when one sees her.
This sub-human "painter" is another idiot, and an evil one at that, anything for his "15 minutes of fame." Some people will sell their very soul for that. I agree with other writers....surely your Daughter would pose again, she came by it naturally, so smear some black paint on her and a monkey mask and do one of Michele O. to hang next to this one!!!

As an Artist, I would have to state the painting is incorrect.
After having that many kids Palin's breasts would hang at the same level as her navel and she would have stretch marks from just below her rib cage to her thighs. Bruce should have used his grandmother as the model instead of his daughter.
Palin's smirk isn't real a smirk, it's really a Cheney snear,
more appropriately the devil's smile. Yes, Bruce needs to do a
second painting with the proper corrections, not neglecting ammo,
blood from polar bear and a pile of books burning from the library.
Oh and "fluffy bunny" ears borrowed from Hef !

We the people are far more intelligent, than the Painter or his Daughter, They are obviously ignorant and have no morals. Sarah Palin is a daughter, mother, wife, professional and a women. This fool wants people in America to believe she would pose or be a part of such a painting ploy. Why would he think this to be art. I believe it is slanderous and it should be illegal and threatening to the well being of women as a whole. How can american people endorse such a foolish and clearly exploitant photograph even if under the pretense of "Freedom of Speach", a constitutional right or privalege. I am not interested in any false publication of any Polition, Democrat or Republican. The problem with current candidates, Is they are just not qualified to successfully change the current Economy without a real solution. It is not politions who control it. It is the people and their Idiology in reference to economics. We, the people want a representative that will endorse programs which will be helpful for a lifetime. not just a Term limit. Economics is a monster which is fueled by supply and demand. The more demand creates more Supply. The current economy can be very fruitful and rewarding and It can be the America which other countries migrate to. We need solutions, real solutions, not just bandaids which will be temporary fixes and later have a negative affect on our generations to come. If government wants control, then they have to implement solutions to the problems. A stimilous package, any amount of money to save a bankrupt bank, lender and/or homeowner, allowing people to take their 401k's and/or retirement accounts without a penalty is a bandaid, not a solution./// My idea of solutions; encourage foreign officials to continue FREE TRADE, we need them and they need us. encourage off-shore drilling in areas where the environmental threat can be nominal or controlled, California for example has alot of vacant land which can be improved and developed. We cannot make everyone happy always. A higher being has control of that. Why make the rich pay higher taxes, everyone should pay the same percentage [of course if your income is at the highend you would definately pay more taxes.---who would argue that. after-all THAT IS EQUALITY. Stimulate the people by giving them the ability to keep their homes, across the board---if hardships accur then require the banks and/or lending institutions; including fannie mae and freddie mac to facilitate a re-structuring of their loans prior to the default statis to allow a skip payment plan, a reduction in interest rate, extension of loan term from 30yr to 40 or 50yr [the life expectancy is now much longer for people due to more people being health wise and medical technology, thus a longer loan term can be a solution in a Market where making that payment is a real challenge] also create a loan program or programs which encourage Loan assumptions, which would allow a family member or an interested individual--not an investor to assume the loan in liu of a default on loan. The losses will always be there, they always have been, however they will be way lower than what is now being experienced. The reason the market took a steep dive is because across the nation, politicians who were investors or affiliated with them, got greedy and limits were placed on programs and/or eliminated that made it more difficult for the typical American to save their loan in case of a hardship and thus forcing the default process.--also creditors need to have a limit on the interest rate, fees and penalties that can be charged, it is out of control and people cannot fathum the thought of paying such astronomical fees. Because no-one, not the president, congress, senators and/or any political officials at the national, federal, state and local jurisdictions has implemented any solutions, real solutions., we are now in a major crisis situation. I don't know who will read this, I hope someone with some political clout because we are in trouble, yes that is true, however it is possible to stimulate the people to increase the demand and the supply in a positive way for everyone. The rich man can still help the poor man and the middle man can still benefit as well. [small business, home business, private industry] etc. It is a dominoe effect.----Start with the people and work your way up. Not the reverse which is what the current politicians are doing, yes even OBAMA/BIDEN. I mean really, a 700Billion package for who the top notch officials who already are top heavy in salaries and bonus pay, to save the predator lender/brokers/banks. The Federal Government knows when a bank is at risk of default, just like the bank knows when the homeowner is at risk of default.--why react after the fact. fix the problem prior to it getting out of control.--not with bandaids with actual programs which will help for 5-10 years. It takes years of study for a plan to build and complete shopping center, subdivision, commercial bldgs etc. It takes years for the goverment to implement programs which they say will help improve the economy and it should be factured in the highs & lows of real estate markets. .---concerned female hispanic late 40's, daughter, wife, mother, US CITIZEN.---one vote for the right candidate!
